“Know Thy Impact”…
Dr. John Hattie, Professor of Education and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, is globally recognized as the world’s foremost researcher on what works best in schools to improve student learning. His evidence-based practices for classroom educators were developed after 80 million people were analyzed for his Visible Learning study, while the compilation of his mega-data offered an arresting back-story:
Of the 138 learning influencers from the six areas that contribute to learning (student, home, school, curricula, teacher, teaching and learning approaches), Hattie found that making teaching and learning visible was pivotal to student improvement. In addition, the study proved that positive teacher-student interaction [not testing!] was the most important factor in effective teaching.
According to Dr. Hattie –
“Visible Learning and Teaching occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own teachers.”
He developed a professional development institute, Visible Learning plus, to provide schools with an in-depth review-and-change model to help best practice teaching and learning take place.
A bold, state-wide collaboration between Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMSPA), Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (MI ASCD) and Oakland Schools is bringing Dr. Hattie and his expertise to Waterford for Day One of a two-day professional development training for Michigan educators. All 500 seats of this August 15/October 1 event quickly sold out, as teachers and administrators familiar with Hattie’s work jumped at the opportunity to add to their own teaching and learning toolboxes.
“Attending Dr. Hattie’s professional development workshop, on their own time before school resumes in September, tells you how much our educators value the opportunity to learn, grow and evolve,” commented Larry Thomas, Executive Director of School Quality at Oakland Schools.
Hattie’s Visible Learning plus agenda will give Institute attendees the foundation to:
- Recognize and implement high effect size instructional strategies and make adjustments to focus on what works best in light of what the research shows
- Discover why a culture of effective feedback is essential in a school and district, and learn strategies to make learning visible by giving and receiving effective feedback
- Learn to use the Visible Learning plus framework, share learning intentions and co-create success criteria for every lesson, giving students the tools they need to recognize success and track their own progress
- Learn how to integrate student voice into planning, evaluating, and developing curriculum
- Learn how to create assessment-capable learners
Or, using John Hattie’s Visible Learning short version for educators, participants will learn to identify and utilize their own proven importance to their students’ learning journey: “Know thy impact!”

“It is about understanding the kind of impact that you the teacher have on the learning, which requires you therefore to look at learning through the eyes of the students. It requires you to sometimes shut up and listen to what the students are saying, what questions they’re asking, understanding where they’re at in terms of the difficulties…Helping them understand what their journey is, where they’re at, what success looks like. Giving them a lot of those kinds of skills, that they can be part of that picture. And that’s really the second part of it – giving them those skills; that they can become their own teachers.” ~ Dr. John Hattie
